About Test

A liver function test (LFT) is a blood test that measures various substances in the blood to assess the health and function of the liver. The liver plays a vital role in many important bodily functions, such as processing nutrients, producing bile, and filtering toxins from the blood

  1. Alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST): These enzymes are normally present in liver cells and are released into the blood when liver cells are damaged or destroyed.

  2. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP): This enzyme is present in many tissues throughout the body, but it is found in high concentrations in the liver and bones.

  3. Bilirubin: This is a waste product produced by the liver as it breaks down old red blood cells. High levels of bilirubin in the blood can indicate liver disease.

  4. Albumin: This is a protein produced by the liver that helps regulate fluid balance in the body.

  5. Total protein: This measures the total amount of protein in the blood, including albumin and other proteins.
